ASSIGNMENT
DUE ON: Wednesday, January 18
- Listen to each of the pieces we recorded in band on Thursday (the links to them are down below). Follow along with your music.
- In the comments section at the bottom of this webpage, I want you to write one thing that we can do better as a full band, AND one thing that you personally can do better. Include specific measure numbers for each piece.
- Do this for all five pieces. You may type it all into one comment.
Aztec Sunrise 1/12/12
Cambridge Overture 1/12/12
Cumberland Gap 1/12/12
Defender of Time 1/12/12
Magna Carta March 1/12/12
Here is a sample comment:
Aztec Sunrise:
1. As a band, we can blend and balance better by listening to the people around us. If we cannot hear the person to our left and right, then we are too loud.
2. Personally, I can remember to play F# instead of F natural when I am supposed to.
Cambridge Overture:
1. Something else
2. Something else
And so on through all five pieces.
Aztec Sunrise: We need to work on blend and balance and I need to work on measures 34-40. Cambridge Overture: I think we need to play softer and I need to work on measure 57. Cumberland Gap: We need to work on blend and balance and I need to work on measures 42 & 43. Defender of Time: We need to play softer at measures 42-49 and I need to work on measures 66 & 67. Magna Carta March: We need to work on keeping time and counting while we rest and I need to work on the first ending.
1. for everything I thik the band could pay a little more attention to dynaamics
2. Personally, I think I can do better on keeping up with the tempo.
Magna Carta March:
1. As a whole, I think that we could add some more emphasism to the dynamics. If there was more variation, then it would sound more musical. Especially the crescendos and decrescendos on measures 45-47 and 69-71.
2. As an individual, I think that I could concentrate more and count more, I could even think of the ruler of time in my head to help me stay on tempo. Since I part of the harmony, it is harder to know if I am playing it exactly where and when I’m suppose to. I especially get confused on measures 67 to the end.
Aztec Sunrise:
1. As a whole, we could pay some more attention to the tempo because we started at a good tempo at the beginning, but by the end of the song, we had sped up a decent amount.
2. As an individual, I think that I should keep more control over my tempo so that the rest of the band doesn’t speed up with me.
Defender of Time:
1. As a whole, we could pay more attention the dynamics during the measures 43-53. It is too loud, but if everyone plays a tad bit softer, than it will sound perfect and much more musical.
2. As an individual, I think that I should play the accents throughout the song better. The spots with accents are measures 15-17, 36-39, 40-42, and 60-66. I should also work on playing exactly with Marcos on our solo which is measures 38-42.
Cambridge Overture:
1. As a whole, we could do better balancing and blending. There were some parts where I could only hear certain instruments.
2. As an individual, I could play a little bit louder because I am the only bell player and there were some parts where I couldn’t really hear myself.
Cumberland Gap:
1. As a whole, we could, again, play the dynamics with more emphasis, and it would sound more musical. There was really no difference before and after the crescendos and decrescendos. The whole song basically sounded the same except for 9-23 which was softer for the flutes.
As an individual, I should be more ready to play measure 38 where it turns to 4-4 again so I don’t miss it again.
Aztec Sunrise:
1. I think we need to blend and balance more, so we all sound together.
2. Personally I can work on getting down to the low notes right at the beggining.
Cambridge Overture:
1. I think we need to follow the dynamics so we can here the flutes.
2. Personally I can practice hitting all the fast notes in measures 1-7.
Cumberland Gap:
1. I think we can work on dinamics and going ftom 4/4 to 3/4.
2. Personally I can make sure to play a B flat instead of a B, and getting down to the lower notes in measures 43-46.
Defender of Time:
1. I think we can work on crescendo and decrescendo.
2. I think I need to work on making sure to play a C# not a C.
Magna Carta March:
1. We need to work on the decrescendo at measure 45-47.
2. I need to work on the cresendo and decrescendos and make sure i am playing a F# in the begining then F at the end.
Defender of Time:1.We could work on all staying together a little more because, it sounded like different instruments were playing in all different directions.
2. I need to work on playing the temple blocks at the right tempo and volume level.
Magna Carta March:1.As a band we could work on staying together better, throughout the entire song.
2. I should work on staying on the same beat as the band and the other percussionists.
Cumberland Gap:1.We could have blended the notes instead of kind of seperating them.
2.I could work on my dynamics when the flutes play a solo for 2 beats.
Cambridge Overture:1.We could work on starting together better and sounding more together.
2.I could work on staying together with the rest of the band and work on my dynamics.
Aztec Sunrise:1.We could try to hold and blend the notes throughout the whole song.
2.I could work on keeping a steady slow tempo.
THE END!!!!!!
1- Aztec Sunrise. As a group, we must take breaths at different times.
Personaly, I need to get down to the low notes.
2- Cambridge Overture. (ag) we need to blend and balance.
(p) Timing timing timing
3- Cumberland Gap- (ag) At measure 9 in Foggy Foggy Dew, play as it is written, piano.
(p) I need to say “the”
4- Defender of Time- (ag) Creshendo and decreshendos.
(p) Remember to play the F#
5- Magna Carta March- (AG) Pay attention to dynamics.
(p) Breath every two measures.
Aztec sunrise
as a band,we really kept our volume down.
personally, i think i should work keeping the note steady
Cambridge Overture
1.As a band, I think we did very good with blending and balancing also with dynamics
2.Personally, I think I need to work on keeping tempo
Cumberland Gap
1. As a band,I think we need to work on blending and balancing.
I think the trumpets need to work on keeping a steady beat.
2. Personally, I think I need to work on counting in my head.
Defender of Time
1. As a band, I think we did great.
2. Personally, I have work on this song so much this year happy to see all the work payoff.
Magna Carta March
1.As a band, I think we need to work on blending and balancing.
2.Personally, I think this is the song I and the rest of the band need to work on.
Aztec Sunrise:
1. As a band, I think that we can play a little quieter.
2. Personally, I think that I can make the low notes on the second part better.
Cambridge Overture:
1. As a band, I think that we can blend and balance better.
2. Personally, I think that I can hold out the notes at the beginning and end of the song to the full value.
Cumberland Gap
1. As a band, I think that we can play quieter when the quiet instruments have their solos.
2. Personally, I think that I can make sure that when there is an E flat, I play E flat instead of E natural.
Defender of Time:
1. As a band, at measure 24, the instruments coming in should be quieter.
2. Personally, I need to make sure I play F# instead of F natural
Magna Carta March:
1. As a band, we should blend and balance better.
2. Personally, I should remember that it is 2/4 time because sometimes I forget and think it is 4/4.
Aztec Sunrise;
Group- We could blend better.
Me- Learn to play F# not F natural.
Cambridge Overture;
Group- The clarinets could be quieter in the beggining.
Me- Learn to play Bb not B natural.
Cumberland Gap;
Group- We could B+B more.
Me- I could work on line 7, measures 41-46.
Defender of Time;
Group- We could work on not speeding up at the end.
Me- I could work on holding out my notes.
Magna Carta March;
Group- We could B+B better.
Me- I could work on my dynamics.
(; Thats about all I have to say. Overall, I think we did pretty good compared to when we were first learning everything.
the lowbrass needs to play louder in all the songs.i really had a hard time hearing them(me too).i think what i can do personally is play louder, better, and blow more air into my instrument. other than the low brass, everybody did excellent in my ears
in defender of time the agression gets me,i love the agression.personally i need to make my parts more agressive(im not the agressive kind of person)
